Module 6 Reflection Prompt


How did understanding the standards and the pre-comp verification help you design your FE plan? How can you use your ePortfolio to help others understand how to integrate technology more effectively in the classroom?

Description

This reflection is based off of the content in module 6 as well as the discussion board topic. I also used my pre-comp verification document as well as the NETS-TF standards as a basis for this reflection. The class reading of chapter 8 from the book ISTE's Technology Facilitation and Leadership Standards was a final basis for this reflection.

Impact

When I first set out to do my FE plan, I have to admit I was a little nervous. I looked at the ePortfolio examples Dr. Ward put up in Springboard and I thought "I'm never going to be able to to this". I thought about how I do not use technology much and started wondering how I was going to change that. Then I reviewed my pre-comp verification and compared it to the NETS-TF standards and remembered that I had met or exceeded all the standards and I started to calm down. I have a tendency to look at assignments and stress myself out because I don't know where to start. I also always thought that I never used technology because I don't have any fancy types of technology available at school.

I reminded myself, however, that I do use what I have available to me so I started thinking about how I can use what I have to help me complete my field experiences. There is a teacher at my school who is always asking me how to do things that involve the use of technology. I think she is almost scared of it because she tells me she doesn't want to break any of it. I told her the best way to learn it is to play with it. I also think there are many other teachers at my school who may be like this so a lot of my field experiences that I planned have me providing professional development on the technology we have available to use for teachers at my school who are interested in learning more about them. Then I thought how in order to do this I will have to put information together on TPACK for them, so they know how to integrate technology most effectively.

I also want to work with the district's technology committee because I feel like it is the place where I can make the most impact with what I learn about instructional technology. For example, whenever we get new technology in my school district it seems to start from the top and filter down. For example, even in my school only the upper grades have projectors in their classrooms. I want to share with the people who can make a difference why it is important to have technology available at all grade levels.

Intent

From here I intend to set my plan in place. I tend on getting on the technology committee in my district so I can impact the way technology is viewed in my district. From there I plan on educating my colleagues on TPACK because it is the most effective teaching strategy. My colleagues need to understand the importance of integrating all three components: content, pedagogy, and technology, when planning lessons. I also want to introduce the technology we have available to my colleagues who are interested in making the best use of the technology we have.
